Discover the Magic of the Moselle River: Castles, Wine, and Timeless Villages

river cruise ship on Moselle loop in Germany

Nestled between sloping green hills, charming villages, striking chapels, and over a dozen castles that date back as far as the 11th century, the Moselle River is a breathtaking destination in its own right. Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways Co-Founder and dubbed the "Godfather of River Cruising," has frequently named this river as one of his personal favourites. Discover the beauty of the river less travelled aboard a luxurious river vessel.

Straight from a Storybook

With its half-timbered homes, idyllic vineyards, and unspoiled landscapes, the romantic Moselle Valley feels like a scene from a fairytale. As you relax on your ship’s spacious Sun Deck, you’ll be treated to postcard-worthy views while gliding along the river’s tranquil, meandering curves through dramatic valley bends.

Cochem Moselle River Valley

One of the magical towns nestled within the Moselle River Valley is Cochem, Germany. Like many towns in the region, Cochem is steeped in medieval history and crowned by a towering castle. Its gabled pastel houses, quaint shops, and riverside cafes create a charming atmosphere, with Reichsburg Castle majestically perched above. Famed for its Renaissance and Baroque furnishings, the castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Germany’s Oldest City

Castle in Trier Germany

Trier, founded by the Romans in 16 B.C., is a living museum of UNESCO-listed Roman ruins. The Roman Bridge, Germany’s oldest, dates back to the 2nd century, while the Imperial Baths showcase fascinating underground tunnels. The Porta Nigra, an ancient Roman city gate, stands proudly as a testament to Trier’s rich history, while the city's two UNESCO-designated churches—St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Gothic Liebfrauenkirche—offer glimpses into centuries-old architectural beauty.

After you've dock, explore the city on guided tours such as “Rome of the North” or “Secrets of Porta Nigra.” Alternatively, opt for a biking tour through the city centre or a hike up Petrisberg for stunning panoramic views of the city.

Germany’s Wine Gem

Castle in Bernkastel Germany

Though Germany may be synonymous with beer, the Moselle Valley has been a thriving wine region for over 2,000 years, with a legacy dating back to the Romans. The valley is home to some of the steepest vineyards in the world, which, combined with its climate, foster the perfect environment for producing sweet, high-quality Rieslings. The region is known for “noble rot,” a beneficial fungus that enhances the flavour of certain wines.

On Amawaterways Europe’s Rivers & Castles Wine Cruise from Luxembourg to Nuremberg, enjoy a guided walking tour through Bernkastel, where you’ll visit Bergweiler Winery. Here, you can stroll through the Riesling vineyards, which make up more than half of the grape varieties planted along the Moselle River, and savour a variety of exquisite wines.

More than just a tributary of the Rhine, the Moselle River’s beauty, history, and allure leave a lasting impression on all who sail its waters.
